Improvisational Piecing

This morning, on the Craftsy blog, I saw a phrase that perfectly describes much of what I’ve been doing lately out in my quilting studio — “improvisational piecing.”

A prime example is this pillow that I made a couple weeks ago, from scraps given to me by a co-worker from a project she had just made for Sew Expo.

There’s not much planning involved — mostly just sifting through the scraps and sewing together pieces that roughly go together based on size and shape. The only decision I gave any real conscious thought to was the choice to limit the amount of dark gray and white, making them accents that stand out from the overall look.
